Ask a Sex Therapist: Can an Orgasm Make You Pass Out?

Dear Cay,

Something happened with my girlfriend that really scared me. We had sex then jumped into a hot shower together. We kept messing around in the shower; she had a powerful orgasm then she passed out! I was freaked! Thank goodness I caught her or she would have hit her head. Is this normal?

Reasons For Passing Out After Orgasm

Dear Ben,

It sounds like you two are having a rocking good time with each other! More power to you! I suspect what happened is that all the blood flow to the genitals (vasocongestion) during arousal and orgasm coupled with the hot water (vasodilation) and a standing position drew blood away from the brain and your girlfriend subsequently fainted. Assuming there was no alcohol or drugs involved, it was a drop in her blood pressure or blood sugar that caused her to faint. Does your girlfriend have low blood pressure or issues with her blood sugar? She can see a medical professional if she is concerned. Fainting can also be the result of dehydration. So if you decide to repeat the shower experience, eat, drink water, and be careful! Meanwhile, you have a great story to tell!
